Detlef Ganten

Detlev Ganten came to prominence as a research scientist in the field of hypertension, elucidating fundamental mechanisms in the development of high blood pressure. He was the founding director of the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch, establishing one of Europe’s first biotechnology parks to cover the spectrum from basic to applied science. Currently, Professor Detlev Ganten is Chairman of the Board of Europe’s largest university medical center, the Charité in Berlin.
He has published widely, including ’Life, Nature, Science: Everything you need to know’ (2003) with Thomas Deichmann and Thilo Spahl, and he edits the Journal of Molecular Medicine (JMM).
Professor Ganten has been honoured with the Max Planck Research Prize (1990), the Okamoto Prize, Japan (1990) and the CIBA Prize of the Council for High Blood Pressure Research, American Heart Association (1992). He has received the German Distinguished Service Cross (Bundesverdienstkreuz) and is a Knight of the French "Legion d'Honneur".
